"Avoidance" 4/16
Join me online for the next Solar Playback: one woman improvisation honoring true stories spontaneously told by participants in the Zoom room.
Thursday, April 16th from 7-8:15pm ET.
Doing Taxes… Difficult Conversations… Divisive Issues… Writing a Will… Talking About Death… The theme for the next Solar Playback is “Avoidance.”
According to the Oxford Languages online dictionary, “avoidance” means:
the action of keeping away from or not doing something
the action of preventing something from happening
When you think of avoidance in your own life, what comes to mind? How do you understand this word in practice? We can avoid things repeatedly (risky substances, toxic relationships…), or we can avoid things once, in the moment (accidents, close calls, near misses…). How has avoidance served you in your life and how has it hindered you? How do you see this word today? We’ll explore the many flavors of “Avoidance” through personal associations and volunteered true stories from those gathered online.

Reflection Questions:
When have you avoided something in your life? What was the reason? What did your avoidance lead you to in the end?
Are there currently issues, people, places, activities that you are avoiding? What is that like for you? What are you learning from this experience?
Have you ever learned from another that they were avoiding you? What was that like? How did that resolve?
When is avoidance a healthy behavior and when is it unhealthy?
When has avoiding something been a blessing in hindsight?
What do you make of the graph below, showing the increase in our use of the term “avoidance”?
Apparently we are using “avoidance” more and more as a term in our public discourse.
How do you understand your own avoidance behaviors, on a personal, familial, national, cultural, societal level?
What does avoidance teach you? What has it taught you in the past?
Come with an open mind to witness others telling true stories and to perhaps tell a story of your own. All are welcome. Use the button below to register for free over Zoom to attend this online event.
