Um, err, uh

Um, err, uh… Oh my!

Earlier this week I was listening to a professional staff member at one of Portland’s most prestigious institutions give a talk. Within the first few moments I knew to take a deep breath.

This will not be easy, I thought to myself.

I was compelled by the topic, really interested in what was being said, but needed to take frequent deep breaths to recompose myself and focus.

Why, you ask?

This speaker’s talk was riddled with the filler um. It was distracting, so distracting in fact that I contemplated leaving the talk. The talk I had traveled in the frigid morning weather to attend. I had even paid for parking! I was not going to leave.

What was most upsetting about this whole experience, you ask?

The lackluster public speaking on display was entirely avoidable, easily remedied, super ‘fixable’! In other words, it did not have to be this way!

Perhaps the worst part of it all is that I knew how much more compelling and impactful this talk would have been if the speaker were more succinct and clear. Perhaps even this individual would be further along in their career if they had a few practice sessions and memorable pointers to use to keep improving on their own time.

I want to know more
